The Base Camp of Innovation

Strategy Meets the Workbench

About Pocket Pioneering

Welcome to the base camp of innovation. When an organization faces a "wicked problem" or a strategic fog, Pocket Pioneering acts as the partner ready to navigate the climb.

The Vision: Navigating the "Fuzzy" Front-End

Every organization eventually stands at the foot of a mountain—a complex, undefined challenge where the path forward is unclear. There is often a sense that change is necessary, but the time, specific tools, or outside perspective to define what that change looks like is missing.

Pocket Pioneering exists to bridge the gap between a vague sense of unease and a concrete, actionable plan. I do not believe in launching massive, expensive expeditions right away. Instead, I act as a Scout and Guide. I use a compact, versatile toolkit to build a Base Camp: the place where chaos becomes strategy, and strategy becomes a tangible Proof of Concept.

"I must change to remain the same."

The Methodology: The Swiss Army Knife

Pocket Pioneering approaches every challenge with the versatility of a Swiss Army Knife. This represents a commitment to being hands-on and prepared for any terrain:

Versatility

For every problem, there is a tool—or I build one. I combine strategic depth with a maker’s execution.

Agility

Designed to be lean and fast, moving through the "fuzzy" front-end without the weight of a large firm.

Tangible Results

I deliver something that works—whether that is a model, a tool, or a functional prototype.

I work directly with leadership and teams to ensure that by the time Pocket Pioneering moves on, the organization has a clear roadmap and the confidence to complete the journey independently.

The Pioneer: Meet Ruben den Uyl

My journey to founding Pocket Pioneering has been anything but linear—and that is exactly why it works. I am a strategist with a maker’s heart.

The Academic Foundation

I was trained at the TU Delft, in the Faculty of Architecture, where I earned a Master’s degree in Management in the Built Environment. This gave me a foundation in Corporate Real Estate Strategy, teaching me how to balance complex organizational goals with technical and financial reality. During my studies, a minor in Rapid Prototyping opened my eyes to the idea that creativity isn't just visual—it’s about finding a creative solution to a technical problem or a strategy.

A Global Perspective

From the bustling cities of the Netherlands to remote indigenous communities in the Canadian Arctic and Alaska, I have spent my career navigating diverse environments. Working on renewable energy projects in the North taught me how to adapt quickly to new contexts and communicate across cultural and professional boundaries.

The Entrepreneurial Spirit

I have always been driven by a "getting stuff done" mindset. Whether I was running a student business, advising major corporations like KLM and ING, or helping a renewable energy firm expand into new international markets, my focus has remained the same: identifying opportunities and building the structures needed to seize them.

A Tech-Enthusiast & Naturalist

When I am not solving business puzzles, I am usually in the mountains—hiking, skiing, or repairing something in my workshop. I am a designer at heart; I love taking things apart to see how they work and putting them back together better. My love for nature fuels my desire to create a more sustainable world, while my passion for innovation and new technology keeps Pocket Pioneering at the cutting edge.
